Two weeks ago, the girls played in the 18-hole league CIF qualifier at Santa Maria CC.  It was the first time some of them had ever played 18 holes the big accomplishment was that they persevered and finished with smiles.  Vivecca Baray, our lone senior, led the team as she has done all year.  Sofia Regalado was not far behind, and showed that going into her senior year, she is setting the standard for girls golf next year.  The other girls, Phoebe Becerra, Natalie Gonzales, Yuridia Ramos & Esther Arce, showed how two months of not playing can be a hard obstacle to overcome.  They started slow but their play improved as the day went on.  They really do have a foundation to be good golfers.  We are hoping that a good summer program will lead SMHS Girls Golf to new heights.  Congrats on a great season girls.

Finally, I want to use this space to congratulate Vivecca Baray.  She has become the first female golfer from SMHS, that I am aware of, to sign to play golf at the college level.  She has signed to play golf for University of La Verne, in Southern California.  Vivecca has worked hard to get an academic scholarship and after enrolling she contacted the women’s golf coach.  This week, coach Brad Johnson, emailed me to let me know that "we are excited to have Vivecca as part of the La Verne University women's varsity golf program!  I can't wait to have her on campus this upcoming Fall.”

When I asked Vivecca what golf means and her outlook she said, “Three years ago, when I joined the golf team, I never thought I would fall in love with the sport. It helped me discover leadership skills, make new friends, and find a new passion. Coach Cheney helped me to better my game and continue to play at the University of La Verne. Golf helped me connect with new people and bond with family, friends, and others. I hope for it to continue to teach discipline, hard work, and focus. I have to believe in myself. I know what I can do, what I can achieve."

Xổ số An Giang hàng tuần This is an exciting time for Vivecca and SMHS golf.  She has been a joy to coach and I am excited to follow the next phase of her career.

I’ve included some information from a press release that will hopefully go out soon:

  • She is an excellent student.  I actually had her in class this year, and even with the challenges of distance learning she continued to work hard to get top grades. In fact, it was her grades that earned her a 4-year academic scholarship to La Verne
  • She joined the golf team as a sophomore and didn’t get much playing time because it was a very experienced, veteran team with six seniors.
  • Her peers selected her as captain her junior and senior seasons.
  • She led the team in scoring average her junior and senior seasons
  • She earned all-league honors her junior and senior seasons
  • She was the heart and soul of our team this year.  She was a true leader in a sense that the other girls on the team followed her.  It doesn’t matter if it was a Saturday at the driving range, practicing in the rain, or even dressing like a golfer, if Vivecca was involved, the rest of the girls would be as well.  It sounds like a small thing but her influence on how the girls dressed was the most amazing thing.  This is my 11th season coaching the girls team and usually the girls just come to practice wearing whatever they wore to school.  From day one this season, Vivecca showed up for practice wearing typical women’s golf apparel, and it didn’t take long and the other girls were following her lead.
  • Her leadership example of making the most of practice impacted the improvement of the newest players on the team.  Usually, when I arrived at the golf course, she was already there practicing her putting.  Her example created a focused attitude towards practice.  That focus was a huge benefit to the team.
  • She loves golf.  When she is committed to a goal, she puts everything into achieving it.  And, her parents are 100% supportive of her new passion.
  • She worked hard during COVID to improve her game and has accelerated with the decision to play for La Verne.

If you see her at graduation, extend your congratulations.
